Ryhmäliikuntaohjaajan työssä on oleellista pystyä kuuluvasti ohjaamaan sekä liikkumaan vapaasti yhtä aikaa. Tämä asettaa äänentoistolle aivan erityislaatuisia vaatimuksia.
Ryhmäliikuntatunnit saattavat siis edellyttää liikkumista ja puhumista yhtäaikaisesti hyvinkin erilaisissa asennoissa. Yksi tärkeimmistä työvälineistä ryhmäliikuntatunnin ohjaajalle on mikrofoni ja headset, joka pysyy päässä myös reippaassa liikkeessä, kuten esim. rangan rullauksissa, kierroissa ja taivutuksissa.
Mikrofoni on ergonomian kannalta oleellinen työväline varsinkin ohjatessa suuria ryhmiä.
Mikrofonin tulee istua kantajalleen ja pysyttävä päässä myös silloin, kun pää on alaspäin. Sen on sallittava laajat liikkeet ja nopeat siirtymiset liikkeestä toiseen samalla kun antaa suullisia ohjeita.
Mikrofoni, jossa on erikseen panta ja lähetinosa, ei sovellu tällaiseen ohjaustyöhön kovinkaan hyvin. Pannan ja lähetinosan välinen johto hidastaa siirtymiä ja hankaloittaa liikkumista, kuten vaikka rullauksia takertumalla selkään.
Ohjaaja monesti sopeutuu tällaiseen ja aivan suotta.
Kun minulle sitten esiteltiin johdoton versio, Samson Airline 88 -headset, tiesin sitä kokeiltuani löytäneeni parhaan mahdollisen työvälineen!

Olen kokeillut kolmenkymmenen ohjausvuoteni aikana monenlaisia mikkejä ja vain harvat niistä pysyvät mukana menossa vaativilla tunneilla. Barre, tanssi- ja joogatunnit ovatkin mikrofonin tulikaste.

Johdoton Samson Airline vastaa kaikkiin vaatimuksiini myös näiden tuntien ohjaamisen suhteen. Headset istuu päähän ja pysyy mukana liikkeessä heilumatta. Näin ohjeet kuuluvat myös silloin, kun pää on liikkeesä. .
Headset oli ensi näkemältä outo, sillä siitä näytti puuttuvan kaikki säädöt, joita edeltäjässään (Samson 77) oli.
Ahaa! Headsetin onkin tarkoitus levätä niskaa vasten.

Pantaosa on umpimuovia, mutta sitä voi varovasti taivutella hyvän istuvuuden saavuttamiseksi. Henkilökohtaisesti minulta meinasi usko loppua, kun aloin taivutella pantaosaa, mutta se suostui varovaiseen muotoiluun ilman voimaa.
Koska lähetin on integroitu tähän pantaan, ei myöskään erillistä lähetintä tarvita, eikä näin ollen myöskään mikkivyötä.

Samson headset käyttö
Headset on yhteydessä vastaanottimeen bluetoothin avulla. Vastaanottimen teknisistä ominaisuuksista osaa ehkä maahantuoja ja valmistaja itse kertoa parhaiten.

..ja takaa. Vasemmassa reunassa oleva pieni reikä on virtajohdolle, isompi taas audiojohdolle.
Meillä Zenanassa boksi on vielä liitettynä ulkoiseen äänikorttiin, sillä käytämme mikkiä myös streamaamiseen ja videointiin.

Lataaminen
Samsonin toinen ominaisuus, jota kiittelen edelleen, on ladattava litiumakku. Headset on siis itsessään ladattava mukana tulevalla laturilla. Lataaminen kestää alle tunnin tyhjästä täydeksi ja latinki pitää ainakin meidän käytössämme 4 perättäistä tuntia.
Valmistajan mukaan lataus kestäisi 8 tuntia, mutta tätä emme ole testanneet käytännössä.
Zenanan headset on ollut käytössä nyt kolmen vuoden ajan ja akku on vaihdettu kertaalleen. Akun vaihtaminen kävi kätevästi pienen liittimen avulla, eikä siinä vaadittu lainkaan erityistaitoja.
Vedenkestävyys
Koska headsetissä on kiinteä akku, ei siinä myöskään ole ylimääräisiä rakoja, josta hiki pääsisi tihkumaan laitteen sisään ja pilaamaan sen kovassa käytössä. Headset onkin suunniteltu veden(/hien)pitäväksi. Lisää plussaa!
Varsinainen suun eteen ulottuva mikrofoniosa on tehty ruostumattomasta teräksestä ja se on kestänyt meidän käytössämme täysin moitteettomasti. Mikkiosaa voi säätää ja muotoilla, sillä se joustaa ja kääntyy suun eteen jouhevasti.
Meillä headset on ollut mukana mm. spinningissä, Pumpissa sekä vauhdikkailla tanssitunneilla, jossa hiki todellakin virtaa.
Heikkoudet
Yritin miettiä huonoja puolia, mutta mieleen ei rehellisesti sanoen tule yhtäkään.

In the work of a group fitness instructor, it is essential to be able to speak clearly while moving freely at the same time. This places very specific demands on sound equipment.
Group fitness classes often require speaking and moving simultaneously in many different positions. One of the most important tools for a group fitness instructor is a microphone and headset that stays in place even during dynamic movement such as spinal roll-downs, rotations, and bends.
From an ergonomic perspective, a microphone is an essential work tool, especially when instructing large groups.
The microphone must fit the wearer well and stay securely in place even when the head is facing downward. It must allow wide ranges of motion and quick transitions from one movement to another while giving verbal instructions.
A microphone that has a separate headband and transmitter unit is not particularly suitable for this type of instruction. The cable between the headband and the transmitter slows down transitions and can interfere with movement — for example during roll-downs when the cable catches on the back.
Instructors often simply adapt to this situation unnecessarily.
When I was introduced to a wireless version, the Samson Airline 88 headset, I knew after trying it that I had found the best possible tool for the job.
Samson Airline 88x
During my thirty years of teaching, I have tried many different microphones, and only a few of them truly keep up during demanding classes. Barre, dance, and yoga classes are a true baptism by fire for any microphone.
The wireless Samson Airline meets all my requirements even when teaching these types of classes. The headset fits well and stays in place without bouncing during movement. This ensures that instructions are heard clearly even when the head is moving.
At first glance the headset looked unusual, because it seemed to be missing all the adjustment features that its predecessor (Samson 77) had.
Then I realized: the headset is actually designed to rest against the back of the neck.
The headband is made of solid plastic, but it can be gently shaped to achieve a good fit. Personally, I almost lost faith when I started bending the headband, but it adjusted to careful shaping without force.
Since the transmitter is integrated into the headband, there is no need for a separate transmitter unit — and therefore no need for a microphone belt either.
What freedom!
Using the Samson headset
The headset connects to the receiver via Bluetooth. The importer or the manufacturer can probably explain the receiver’s technical specifications better than I can.

…and from the back. The small hole on the left is for the power cable, and the larger one is for the audio cable.
At Zenana, the receiver is also connected to an external audio interface because we use the microphone for streaming and video recording as well.

Charging
Another feature of the Samson that I still appreciate is the rechargeable lithium battery. The headset itself can be charged with the included charger. Charging from empty to full takes less than an hour, and in our use the battery lasts at least four consecutive classes.
According to the manufacturer, the battery should last up to eight hours, although we have not tested this in practice.
Our Zenana headset has now been in use for three years, and the battery has been replaced once. Replacing the battery was easy thanks to a small connector and required no special technical skills.
Water resistance
Because the headset has an integrated battery, there are no unnecessary gaps where sweat could seep inside the device and damage it during heavy use. The headset is therefore designed to be water- (or sweat-) resistant. Another big plus.
The actual microphone arm that extends in front of the mouth is made of stainless steel and has performed flawlessly in our use. The microphone arm can be adjusted and shaped as needed, since it flexes and moves smoothly in front of the mouth.
We have used the headset in spinning classes, Pump classes, and energetic dance sessions where the sweat definitely flows.
Weaknesses
I tried to think of some downsides, but honestly none come to mind.
Our recommendation
If you are looking for an instructor-friendly headset that can handle sweat and energetic movement, the Samson Airline is exactly that.
